Spaceworld 2001: Controller Goes Up in Price

Did you think Nintendo's controller would only be $19.95 in the US? Well think again.

August 22, 2001

Sorry folks, but it seems as though Nintendo of America has upped the price of its GameCube controller over its Japanese equivalent. While the joypad will retail in the Land of the Rising Sun for 2,500 yen ($22), it'll go for $34.95 in the US -- quite a bit more expensive. Nintendo made the pricing official at its Space World show this week.

On a brighter note, the company also announced the finalized pricing for its Digicard memory solution. The Japanese version, referred to officially as Memory Card 59, will retail for 1,400 yen, and the US one will sell for $14.95 -- now that's more like it.

More to come.

Soul Calibur 2 Running on GameCube?

Despite reports to the contrary, this could very well be the case. Click here for more.

August 22, 2001

Last week IGNcube reported that a version of Namco's Soul Calibur 2 would come to Nintendo's next-generation console, and that it would be previewed for the first time at the Space World 2001 pre-show press event in Tokyo, Japan. At the time, we had also heard from insiders that any footage shown would most likely be snapped from the arcade version of Soul Calibur 2, which is still under development.

Well, Soul Calibur 2 was announced for GameCube and footage was displayed, but was it really arcade media? We quizzed Nintendo's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan and company technical wizard Jim Merrick on the subject, who both indicated otherwise.

"I have to assume it's the GameCube version, just knowing where Namco is right now [on the game]," noted Merrick.

Kaplan added: "I'm pretty sure that's what NCL would choose to use." Indeed it would make sense. Every other in-motion footage of games from third-parties was of the GameCube versions.

"I don't think NCL would show arcade footage [of Soul Calibur 2]," remarked Merrick when pressed on the subject.

IGNcube's own sources on the matter have explained that Namco has been in possession of GameCube hardware since late 2002, possibly sometime before last year's Space World show. This would give the company more than enough time to get its fighting franchise sequel up and running on Nintendo's next-generation console in time for a debut at this week's event.

Not definitive proof one way or the other, but perhaps a glimmer of hope for Soul Calibur fanatics who were under the impression that the game was impressively early on, and therefore not running on GameCube at this time.
