Space World 2001: Metroid Prime Progress Report

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto brings us up to date on the progress of the first-person shooter.

August 22, 2001

At Space World 2000, Nintendo showed 10 seconds of Metroid Prime on FMV. At the Electronics Entertainment Expo, we saw 15 seconds of FMV and pre-renders using in-game models. And now, at Space World 2001, presumably the big unveiling of the game, we get *two* new seconds of the game -- this time running in real-time. So what gives? Is there a playable product somewhere behind these limited showings and if so will we ever see it? Nintendo's master designer Shigeru Miyamoto fills in the gaps of the situation below:

"What I can tell you about Metroid Prime is that for Nintendo, the development is working pretty well so that we are overseeing the stage of fine tuning and finishing touches. As a matter of fact, we were about to present Metroid Prime to the Space World 2001 show, but it doesn't yet have good enough sound effects, and also I was not fully satisfied with the control. So I decided in the end, just a few days ago, that we should not bring it to the Space World show.

"Instead, I was thinking about showing video footage of Metroid Prime. Actually, the videotape is in my bag. But the guy sitting next to me here said that if we showed the Metroid video, the whole meeting would be occupied with it [laughs]. So he discouraged me to do so. But we are on the right track and we will be ready to launch it within one year from now. The directors are located in the United States and we, as the game producers, are giving suggestions every week on teleconference and face-to-face every month or two."

More as it develops.

Space World 2001: Miyamoto Talks on Mario Sunshine, Marionette, 100 Marios

Nintendo's master designer touches briefly on the two high profile GameCube projects.

August 22, 2001

At E3 2001, Nintendo accidentally announced three secret titles -- Mario Sunshine, Marionette and 100 Marios on its online release list. The list was pulled shortly after it was published, but the damage was done, the curiosity of gamers piqued. At Space World 2001, Mario Sunshine was announced and previewed briefly as the next big Mario title for GameCube. But what of the other two titles? Designer Shigeru Miyamoto spoke out on all three in a recent roundtable. His comments below:

Mario Sunshine
"I'd rather not explain about the new Mario, as I've said. I deliberately chose images that will not reveal a lot about the game so that you will not know its secrets. But because we have limited these things, I think you are wondering what is so interesting about the game. One thing for sure is that it's called Mario Sunshine -- and it having that name, we really have to sell it during the summer time [laughs[.

"Mario is shouldering on his back some mysterious gadget -- some machine. Of course, it contains a secret. We are going to make the right progress for the game and please look forward to it."

100 Marios
"So many projects and so many experiments are being carried out at Nintendo. For example, the 100 Marios or 128 Marios -- some of the technology there has already been integrated into Pikmin. And having said that, some other experiments are still going on because we are always looking two or three years in advance, so maybe sometime later we will show some part of 100 Marios."

Marionette
"And as for Marionette, it is still under development. It is not a Mario game, but an actual Marionette game utilizing a puppet. I am hoping to make something both complicated and simple at the same time [with this game], which is kind of a contradiction. But already we are experimenting. And once again, sometime in the future we may be able to show you something on it."

We'll have more on the above projects as the information becomes available -- which isn't likely to happen anytime soon.

Space World 2001: Why no Online Announcements?

We get the answer straight from the horse's mouth. Click here for the full story.

August 22, 2001

So you're wondering why Nintendo still hasn't announced its online plans for GameCube? Is there some conspiracy to keep you from playing the console online? The answer is no. It's just not a smart business decision yet, or so Nintendo says. Designer Shigeru Miyamoto recently explained the strategy behind -- well, no online strategy. See below for the details:

"Nintendo is very skeptical about the business side of online gaming. Many people who have been saying online gaming is the wave of the future are now starting to wonder as we have been wondering about the business and profit side of it all. As a game creator, I cannot say I am not interested in online gaming. Rather, I feel some attraction to the future of it. But looking at the situation of it, I have to say that many of the people touting online games are only doing so because they are stuck without new ideas. They cannot find out any new way of creating games so by saying that they will have online in the future, even though it's not coming, they are trying to make some excuse already I think.

"Having said all of that, of course Nintendo is always ready to expand into the online business and we are making preparations for that all the time. But once again, we cannot say there is an established business model for it yet. For me as a creator, the communication aspect of gaming is more interesting. I believe online is just a part of the communication, which is much larger."

Space World 2001: The Pokemon No-show

Nintendo won't show Pokemon for GameCube at Space World this year. Find out why.

August 22, 2001

Zelda, Mario, Metroid -- check. All of the big franchises made appearances at Space World 2001 in some form, and ever so briefly. But Nintendo's biggest franchise of all, Pokemon, was suspiciously absent. Given that Meowth's Party was previewed at Space World 2000, why hasn't reappeared? It could be that the game is seeing a drastic redesign similar to what Legend of Zelda went through.

"Our main focus of today was the international software to be introduced by this year. That's why we didn't include Pokemon and several other projects," said Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto. "But in the future we are going to show something on GameCube Pokemon. Of course, we have shown it once or twice and today we didn't show, so in that case please suspect there is something about it that isn't decided and something not yet ready to be shown. When it's ready, we will show it."

Seems Miyamoto is preparing us for change. Indeed, other Nintendo officials have gone on record to note that GameCube Pokemon is "not a small project," and that it's going to take quite a long time to realize. And so the wait is on.
