GameCube Most Popular Console Ever

Nintendo declares that GameCube is the fastest selling console in history.

November 28, 2001

Nintendo announced today that its GameCube platform is the fastest selling of the three next-generation systems. The company also declared that its flagship offering Luigi's Mansion is the most popular launch title in history.

According to Nintendo, GameCube sold more than one-half million units during the first week of availability. The firm claimed that its machine sold at nearly twice the rate of Microsoft's Xbox system and 25 percent faster than Sony's PlayStation 2 when it debuted last year.

Initial North American shipments numbered 740,000 hardware units. 100,000 systems went to Canada and Latin America and another 75,000 to US rental stores. Nintendo said that all of the 80 percent shipments to retailers have sold out, though new loads of 125,000 pieces are already arriving.

"To have outpaced any other videogame console launch ever would be notable in its own right," said Peter Main, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "But to accomplish this under the current economic conditions is truly remarkable. There is a seemingly endless appetite for high quality, stay-at-home entertainment at an affordable price -- which is a perfect definition of Nintendo GameCube."

Meanwhile, Nintendo alleged that its Luigi's Mansion game has sold at a phenomenal rate, even eclipsing debut sales of Super Mario 64 for its previous home platform. Star Wars Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader II appears to be a strong second.

"At a suggested retail price of $199.95, consumers can purchase Nintendo GameCube and two games for the same cost as rival, current generation game consoles alone. It's like getting two games for free," Main added.

More as it develops.

ATI Banks on Strong Cube Sales

The chip maker could nab up to $32 million from GameCube sales alone, according to analysts.

November 28, 2001

Bloomberg News is reporting that chip maker ATI stands to earn as much as $32 million in sales by March 2002 from its GameCube contributions alone. The company, which supplies the graphics hardware for GameCube, is estimated to receive between $5 and $8 for each console sold, according to analyst group Scotia Capital.

Nintendo released its next-generation console November 18 in the US and expects to sell through four million GameCubes by March 2002.

"What used to be a niche space has now broadened out to where a lot of homes in North America and around the world are playing video games either on a computer or on one of these consoles," said David Hodgson, an analyst at Dundee Securities in Toronto.

Dengeki Magazine's Top 30 for Japan is out, and Super Smash Bros. DX (Melee to you and me) has done quite well.

According to Dengeki Magazine's sales rankings, Super Smash Bros. DX for GameCube was the #2 top-selling game in Japan for the week of Nov. 19-25. (It didn't even go on sale until the 21st.) The game sold over 358,000 copies according to Dengeki's figures, making it already the most popular GameCube title yet in Japan.

So what game could outsell the mighty Smash Bros.? Why, Enix's 3D remake of Dragon Quest IV, of course. It took the top slot with an impressive 638,000 units sold. DQIV has been the most highly anticipated game in Japan ever since it was announced, so the big numbers should come as no surprise.

Famitsu Weekly should release its own sales figures sometime soon. Although Famitsu's numbers tend to be lower than Dengeki's because the former only includes certain aspects of the retail sector, Famitsu's weekly sales figures are also on a differently staggered schedule and will cover a few more days than Dengeki's report.

Discuss it in the Forum!

You think? Wait a sec...a platform that's easy to develop for developers and publishers like? They must be crazy.

We've already heard a million times that the GameCube hardware is easy to develop for. But what's bringing third parties back to Nintendo?

There's a great article on ie Magazine that includes thoughts from THQ, Ubisoft, Midway and more. Check it out by clicking here.
